Zero Hour Westbrook | The Classical
I wrote about Russell Westbrook and what it means to be a point guard. Shoutouts to Bethlehem Shoals for making this happen.

Washington Wizards and the Plight of Tantalus | Hardwood Paroxysm
Wrote a little something about the problems with the Wizards’ status quo, a Greek mythological figure, and a year of childhood I will never reclaim.

“You can walk away from someone who doesn’t love you. And you can walk away from someone you don’t love. But when the love is mutual,” Roy said. “The hardest thing is to walk away.”

Still In The Presence Of Giants | Hardwood Paroxysm
Here it is.
After about a week of banging my head on my bed, bedpost, and the dinner table, I’ve finished the freaking piece. It’s a celebration of three very important basketball entities that have retired since the 2010-11 season ended. Three separate passages on Shaq, Yao Ming, and the FreeDarko blog, tied together by their lasting influence on how we perceive the game.
This took me forever. And I hope someone enjoys it.

A Series of Subtitles | Hardwood Paroxysm
My tribute to the 2011 NBA Playoffs and the fantastic season that was. It’s a long one (it’s over 2500 words), but split in to 300-400 word mini-pieces. If you have any predilection towards the game of basketball, I hope you do give it a look. It’d make my day.
No excerpts this time. Read the whole thing! Haha.

Monta Ellis and the act of domesticating a wild animal
My latest for Hardwood Paroxysm, on Monta Ellis and if he’s worth trading for.
Because you don’t just introduce Monta Ellis onto your team, dust your hands and walk away. Adding Ellis is sticking Tarzan in an office cubicle. Monta comes from a different world, raised straight out of high school in a system devoid of logical structure. There is too much we don’t know about Ellis — how he’d adjust to systems not built around speed and chaos, how he’d fare playing minutes in the sub-40s, how much of his inefficiency is derived from fatigue — and that might be enough for some teams to bow out of the race. Teams will question what kind of impact he’ll have on their culture and dynamic, and it will be a valid concern. For all the strides Ellis has made to improve his craft, his home for the last six years fostered his individuality, but did very little for his concept of team play.
I have some stats that may shock some people in regards to Ellis’ utility. Hope you give it a gander.

502 Bad Gateway | Hardwood Paroxysm
Here is my latest at Hardwood Paroxysm. It’s playoff time, but I decided to dwell on a player whose season is over. I discuss Franz Kafka’s short story, Before the Law - one of Kafka’s most important works - and Houston Rockets guard Terrence Williams.
It’s about waiting. It’s about going through life passive-aggressively. It’s about struggle. Very, very smart intellectuals have told me they enjoyed it. Hopefully it’s worth your time as well.
